Gender Disparity in the Music Industry

“People want to hear women’s stories. It’s a fallacy to say that they’re going to turn the channel.” - #JenniferNettles⠀⠀
⠀⠀
At the @cma awards this week, country super star @jennifernettles used the her red carpet time to make a bold statement to The #CountryMusicAssociation. The iconic @sugarland lead singer wore a white suit and hot pink train by @csiriano that read, “Play Our F****n Records. Please and Thank You,” and “Equal Play,” to protest the unequal number of female voices heard on country radio. ⠀ ⠀

According to two reports released earlier this year confirmed a gender bias on country radio stations: The academic analysis, “Gender Representation on Country Format Radio: A Study of Published Reports from 2000-2018,” conducted by Dr. Jada Watson, of the University of Ottawa, and the Women of Music Action Network, discoveredt hat, between 2002 and 2018, female country artists were played significantly less than male country artists. ⠀⠀
In 2018 alone, songs by female artists only made 11.3% of the year’s radio play, and the ratio of men to women on the country radio last year was 9.7 to 1.⠀⠀

We are proud of Jennifer for being a #RADvocate, and boldly speaking up through her fashion to challenge gender inequality. It inspires us to keep pushing for progress and change! #CMAs2019
