What is climate change? Climate change is the slow warming of the planet caused by an excess of greenhouse gases (e.g carbon dioxide) in the Earth’s atmosphere, which trap heat from the sun. This planetary warming is creating a new climate, making the one place where humans can live, slowly unliveable. ⠀ ⠀ How will a hot planet feel? Climate change will not be a one time catastrophic event. Instead, our quality of life will slowly erode. Maybe you’ve heard about distant rising oceans but its effects will be personal. On a hot planet, we will experience global food and water scarcity, mass migration, greater inequality, unpredictable weather (so, more violent storms, droughts, and floods), political upheaval, animal extinctions, and more societal violence. ⠀ ⠀ How long do we have to act? Not long! According to "The Future We Choose", "We are in the critical decade. It is no exaggeration to say that what we do regarding emissions reductions between now and 2030 will determine the quality of human life for hundreds of years to come. We must reduce greenhouse emissions by 50% by 2030.” Which means we need to be enacting bold carbon reduction plans NOW. Reducing carbon output is a slow process. We cannot wait another moment to begin.⠀ ⠀ Can we solve this? YES! We can make this the MOST CONSEQUENTIAL DECADE IN HUMAN HISTORY. We have the green technology to make this change now and by investing in it, and committing, this technology will only improve. We must divest from fossil fuels and start building a green future immediately. ⠀ ⠀ What can I do? Become a LOUD climate activist! Tell your politicians you want to see sweeping green policy proposals TODAY! “But I shop green, isn't that enough?” No. Personal decisions are nice but insufficient. We need political candidates, everywhere, at all levels, to know their constituents DEMAND aggressive action. Companies will need to advocate too. Not via green product but via divestment.⠀ ⠀ We have a crucial election this year that will determine our ability to #cancelclimatechange. We need to elect climate candidates and push them even further. Let's each do our part to make this happen. #RADNewWorld
