Surveillance capitalism makes money by monitoring our movements and behaviors online and selling that information 💰 Free services, like Google or Facebook, are two examples of tech companies that sell our data to the marketplace. It’s in their best interest to keep us hooked. Surveillance capitalism is shaping our society, specifically targeting the younger generations, who are most influenced by product suggestions and click-through experiences.⁠⠀

Millennials (1981-1996) were the first generation to grow up with social media and have pioneered the way tech companies approach surveillance capitalism. Along with Gen Z (1996-2010), they have a spending power of over $143 billion. ⁠⠀

The next generation, Gen Alpha (2010-2025) are already demonstrating their spending power where 50% of children between the ages of 6-10 have purchased a suggested product off YouTube or Instagram.⁠⠀

The younger generations are the biggest target with the most spending power. This calls out for a greater need to reform the system 📣 Surveillance capitalism effects our ability to be our authentic selves, which makes preteens and teens most vulnerable. ⁠⠀

➡️ Share resources like articles, podcasts and documentaries with each other to promote awareness and open dialogue⁠⠀
➡️ Organize a meeting at your work, school or home and share the ways you protect yourself from surveillance⁠
